Music and Prayer

' Music can lift our worship into another place. St Augustine wrote: ' the one who sings prays twice.' When we sing something, the words are transformed and their meaning is enhanced. What we sing, we tend to remember far more than words alone. Rhythm, melody, harmony and texture help us to absorb words which lodge deep within us and shape us as humans. How many times do we find ourselves humming or singing a part of a hymn or song that we sang in worship last week? Music helps words that express the truth about God become part of us and feed us from within.'
